Gardening as Art

Viewing rice terraces in the northern mountains of Vietnam is like being in an enormous outdoor exhibition space.

But this is not art for arts sake – each nip and tuck of these steep slopes is cultivated for maximum food production. No fancy equipment or materials are used. Water engineering is simply genius – small channels cut into the edges to ensure gravity flow to each field.

I love that there is not a straight line in sight!

This is sustainability in practice and the whole community is nourished.

Homes are simple and an integral part of the landscape. I was so enchanted by this man’s picturesque home and garden.

Once my productive sloped garden is established, I hope it will be an art piece too.
